ClassesYouth Arts Education In the area of arts education we have developed the MACLA Photo Lab, a sequential, intensive digital photography program for youth from age 8 to 35. Established in 1997, MACLA's Photo Lab has provided artistic and educational development skills for low-income youth in San Jose. Working closely with the parents from the neighborhood adjacent to MACLA, we have developed the photography program as a vehicle for our youth to document everyday life in our community. MACLA's Photo Lab is distinct from other after-school art education programs in the region in its emphasis on cultivating young artists in developing their own personal body of work in fine art photography. Currently in its eighth year, we offer classes to both entry level students as well as an advanced portfolio development seminar for emerging artists. To date, the Photo Lab has included three exhibitions, the publication of two catalogues, a public art project on the facade of MACLA's gallery, and group critiques, lectures, and guest residencies by Mexican photographers Graciela Iturbide and Lourdes Grobet. AfterSchool Arts Programs MACLA provides a range of fee-based afterschool arts programs at school sites. Popular workshops include: cartooning, drawing & painting, Afro-Cuban percussion, mural making, Samba, & Capoeira. MACLA has provided classes for Luther Burbank Elementary School, Escuela Popular, CORAL, San Jose After School, and ACE Charter school.
