Visual Art ExhibitionsMACLA's core Visual Arts programming consists of 5-6 visual arts exhibitions every year enhanced by artists' talks and high-quality publications. Visual arts exhibitions include a range of themes, media and artistic exposure for local to internationally recognized artists. As an alternative Latino arts space we are particularly interested in supporting work that utilizes video, installation, and new media and/or deals with themes of particular urgency in today's society: labor, politics, gender, identity, sexuality, globalization, etc. All exhibitions include artist's talks and related public programming. MACLA staff writes a curatorial essay about each exhibition and publishes a brochure or catalogue, ensuring that the contributions of the Latino arts communities are documented and part of the larger field of contemporary visual arts. Our exhibitions have covered a wide spectrum: from the dynamic Securitree exhibition of MACLA commissioned Torolab , to the Bustin' Out show, and exhibition that presented photography, paintings, video and mixed media work by four talented San Jose-based artists, representing their laboratory of ideas, repository of images, and a glimpse into their cultural contributions. In 2005, MACLA presented its first Chicana/o Biennial, an exhibition and public forum conceived to take inventory of and invite reflection every two years on the continuously emergent energy, critical edge, and aesthetic interventions within contemporary Chicana/o art. Over the last thirty-five years, the field of Chicana/o art and scholarship has developed and expanded exponentially. As an arts movement that developed alongside the Chicana/o civil rights struggles of the 1960s and 1970s. Chicana/o art emerged in direct correlation to social change. MACLA was proud to showcase the work of 36 artists in all mediums, from sculpture to installation, photography to video. MACLA also presents an annual Latino Art Auction in the spring. In addition to serving as an important fundraising event, the Auction is deliberately designed to cultivate collectors and educate the public about the value of visual arts in our community.
